Best draw cards in standard

  • #1 Jun 30, 2011

*mods please delete if there is a thread like this, I couldn't find anywhere*

Ok I'm brewing up a tri color deck for standard. This will be my first standard deck.
    1. What are the two best draw spells in blue?

    2. How many draw spells should I run in a tri color deck?

Blue, Red, Black are the colors I'm fixing to run

    Thanks for all your help!

Tezzeret's Gambit is usually considered the best draw card right now. Proliferate also does a lot of digging.

You don't need many. Sarkhan the Mad should help if you feel like running him.

U/B/R, Grixis. Very easy manabase, if kind of pricey.

Hmm.. in blue this is harder right now. Depends on what you are trying to do. You are running Grixis colors so I take it as a control deck most likely..Or some sort of midrange deck.

Jace's Ingenuity is probably the best draw spell. Foresee is alright but is better if you are looking for specific things. At 3 color Sign in Blood is probably no good. I guess Tezzeret's Gambit would be number 2, but gets a lot better with stuff you actually want to proliferate.

That aside something like Preordain technically a Cantrip I'd probably place higher than most draw spells. But this does come down a lot to what you plan on doing, how important filtering is. See Beyond is another card in this vein but it's probably worse than the other draw spells. On the large side of things there is Blue Sun's Zenith and Recurring Insight. These cards can draw a lot of cards but they are pricey and at that point you have to justify their inclusion.

In general given the state of blue draw spells, I might consider looking at draw engines (permanents that facilitate draw over several turns). The easiest place to start is with planeswalkers. Both Jace Beleren and Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas (depending on artifact threshold) provide a good way to up your draw turn after turn. Dark Tutelage is good in lower cost decks but probably won't work in yours. Another option is creatures. Consecrated Sphinx provides incredible CA on a body.

The final option although depending on list is supplementors are 2 for 1 ETB creatures that provide small CA or replace themselves. Things like Sea Gate Oracle or Phyrexian Rager can be role players. Even stuff like Skinrender or Gatekeeper of Malakir could be considered similar. Some planeswalkers can act in this sort of capacity too.. like Lilliana Vess, or Karn, the Liberated.

Before you can properly answer this question I think you have to figure out how you want your deck to win. Once you have narrowed that down, you probably want to figure out what sort of answers you want to run. From there is will be a matter of tweaking the draw spells to suit your proactive and reactive plans.

I agree. Gambit can essentially be a 3 drop draw and proliferate. I use a play-set in my Esper Tezz deck and it works great to power the planeswalkers. I would also, of course, recommend using it for an Infect deck.
