"Have a Cigar" is the tertiary rail on Pink Floyd'south 1975 album Wish You Were Hither.^{[7] [8]} It follows "Welcome to the Machine" and on the original LP opened side two. In some markets, the vocal was issued as a single. The song, written by Waters, is his critique of the rampant greed and pessimism so prevalent in the management of rock groups of that era.

English folk vocalist Roy Harper provided pb vocals on the song. It was one of just two Pink Floyd recordings with a guest singer on lead vocals, the other existence "The Great Gig in the Heaven" with Clare Torry.

Composition and recording [edit]

The song's music and lyrics were written past Roger Waters in critique of hypocrisy and greed inside the music concern. Waters has frequently unsaid it to be a follow-up to "Coin" with the lyrics representing the demands of a record executive later the delinquent success of The Dark Side of the Moon.

The vocal is more than straightforwardly rock-oriented than the balance of the album, and is the just i on the album that starts abruptly (the other four either fade in or segue from the previous vocal). It begins with a churning riff played on electric guitar and bass and is filled out with additional guitar, electric pianoforte and synthesizer parts to create a rock texture.

"Take a Cigar" concludes with a guitar solo, which is abruptly interrupted by a synthesizer filter-sweep audio effect as the music reduces in volume to tinny, AM radio-like levels. Finally, the song ends with the sound of a radio beingness dialled off-station; this consequence is used equally a transition to the title runway, "Wish You Were Hither".

Harper'south involvement with the recording arose from the dissatisfaction that Waters and David Gilmour felt with their own attempts to sing the lead vocal line. After trying it both separately and as a duet (available on the 2011 Experience and Immersion editions of Wish Y'all Were Here), they turned to Harper, who was recording his album HQ at Abbey Road at the same time as Pink Floyd. Harper agreed to sing the part equally a mode of repaying a favour to Gilmour, who had earlier provided him with some guitar licks ("...for a price").^[9]

In his book Pigs Might Wing: The Within Story of Pink Floyd, author Marking Blake recounts that Gilmour had been unwilling to sing the lead vocal as he did not share Waters' opinions, as expressed in the lyrics, on the nature of the music industry.^[x] Waters has since said he dislikes Harper's version, saying he would take liked information technology to emerge "more than vulnerable and less cynical", calculation that Harper's version was as well parodic while Gilmour loved Harper's vocal delivery and called it the "perfect version".^[11]

Cash Box said that information technology "sounds to usa like a synopsis of some of the fingerpoppers who have probably tried to capitalize off the talents of the Pinkish Floyd grouping. We re wrong, no doubtfulness, but the music is the thing here: a cerebral message."^[12]

Alive [edit]

Harper performed the vocal with the band on one occasion, the group's 1975 Knebworth Festival appearance, during the catamenia Wish Yous Were Hither was existence recorded. The song was besides performed on the band's 1975 Due north American tours sandwiched in betwixt the multi-part "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", with Gilmour and Waters singing pb. It was last performed by the ring on the 1977 In the Flesh tour, equally part of the Wish You Were Here gear up with Waters on atomic number 82 vocals, Gilmour on bankroll vocals and rhythm guitar and Snowy White playing the guitar solos.

Cover versions [edit]

• In 1979, Warner Bros. Records released a 12" single containing a special disco version of "Have a Cigar" past Rosebud, a studio group led by composer Gabriel Yared, from their album Discoballs: A Tribute to Pink Floyd.^{[18] [19]} The song peaked at number four on Billboard's Disco Top 80 chart in June 1979. The B-side was a disco version of "Money".
• In 1992, the band Primus recorded a encompass of the vocal and included it as the endmost track to their Miscellaneous Debris EP.^[20] Their version changed the lyrics slightly: "The ring is but fantastic, of the town you are the talk/Human being, merely who the hell's this guy they call Bob Erect?"
• Foo Fighters recorded two different cover versions of the song. The outset was used as b-side for the "Learn to Fly" CD single,^[21] while the 2d one, with Brian May on lead guitar, first appeared on the Mission: Impossible ii soundtrack,^[22] and later on as an Amazon.com bonus track on their 2009 Greatest Hits anthology and in the 2011 express-edition vinyl only release Medium Rare, released for Record Store Day.^{[23] [24]} Both versions were sung past drummer Taylor Hawkins.^[25]
• The album Instead, released in 2007 by Onetwo, contains a cover version of "Take a Cigar".^[26]
• The main riff of "Have a Cigar" is incorporated into the song "Peruvian Skies" by progressive metal band Dream Theater on their 1998 live album Once in a LIVEtime and on the Live DVD five Years in a Livetime. Also, from their album Images and Words (1992), using the main riff from "Have a Cigar" at the beginning of "Metropolis: Office I".
• A costless CD given with the Oct 2011 event of UK music magazine Mojo includes a cover version of "Have a Cigar" by John Foxx and The Maths.^[27] This version was afterward announced past Mojo equally 'non the finished version' and the correct version was offered equally a complimentary download from the website.^[28]
